So, if you live anywhere near the Champaign-Urbana area, I am sure you have heard about this restaurant. It has been featured on the Food Network, Travel Channel, and in Maxim (and probably others). It seems if you get into a conversation about barbeque, Black Dog WILL come up. Black Dog is located just north of downtown Urbana on the corner of Broadway and Water – the old Todd & John’s (if you were lucky enough to have had a Bloody Mary there when it was open!)
It is definitely a great place to check out. Unfortunately, the restaurant itself is very crowded and it is more than a little difficult to get a seat. They don’t take reservations and they won’t seat you until your entire party is present (which I completely understand). During these times, the service is fairly slow and unless you are lucky enough to get a booth, you will be constantly bumped by both the servers and all the people waiting to be seated – a less than ideal dining experience. I recommend calling it in and picking it up.
It does sound like relief may be coming, as they are working on opening up a second location in Champaign. The second location will be at the corner of Chestnut and Main St. in an old, but newly renovated building – the old railroad freight station. At this point, they have not released an official opening date, but are busy trying to get the old building ready.
I have tried several things on the menu, but it seems I always end up back at the brisket with the Texas Sauce and Milo’s Mustard Sauce. The twice baked potato casserole can’t be missed! They are famous for their burnt ends. Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of eating these yet. As they are their most popular item, they sell out FAST! I will still continue to try to get them every time I call in my order.
If you prefer to dine in, the food is worth the wait and they have an excellent beer menu – serving so much more than boring Buds and Millers.
Here is their menu!
