]]> black dogSo, if you live anywhere near the Champaign-Urbana area, I am sure you have heard about this restaurant. It has been featured on the Food Network, Travel Channel, and in Maxim (and probably others). It seems if you get into a conversation about barbeque, Black Dog WILL come up. Black Dog is located just north of downtown Urbana on the corner of Broadway and Water – the old Todd & John’s (if you were lucky enough to have had a Bloody Mary there when it was open!)

It is definitely a great place to check out. Unfortunately, the restaurant itself is very crowded and it is more than a little difficult to get a seat. They don’t take reservations and they won’t seat you until your entire party is present (which I completely understand). During these times, the service is fairly slow and unless you are lucky enough to get a booth, you will be constantly bumped by both the servers and all the people waiting to be seated – a less than ideal dining experience. I recommend calling it in and picking it up.

It does sound like relief may be coming, as they are working on opening up a second location in Champaign. The second location will be at the corner of Chestnut and Main St. in an old, but newly renovated building – the old railroad freight station. At this point, they have not released an official opening date, but are busy trying to get the old building ready.

I have tried several things on the menu, but it seems I always end up back at the brisket with the Texas Sauce and Milo’s Mustard Sauce. The twice baked potato casserole can’t be missed! They are famous for their burnt ends. Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of eating these yet. As they are their most popular item, they sell out FAST! I will still continue to try to get them every time I call in my order.

If you prefer to dine in, the food is worth the wait and they have an excellent beer menu – serving so much more than boring Buds and Millers.

Here is their menu!

This waterfall claims, at 90 feet tall, to be the highest waterfall in Indiana and is located just about 60 minutes northeast of Champaign-Urbana?

It is a bit difficult to find if you don’t know what you are looking for as it sits right behind the railroad tracks in “downtown” Williamsport. Not exactly the place you would expect to see such a splendid waterfall.

You can park at the top of the waterfall where there is a viewing deck. However, if you ignore the stop sign (which I believe is really just intended for cars), you can hike down to the creek and walk the creek to the bottom of the waterfall. Be careful there are some deep spots near the base of the waterfall.

When we went, there were a few other rebels down there enjoying a dip. I definitely recommend wearing your swimsuit (and bringing river shoes!).

There is another small town about 4 miles east of Wiliamsport that is home to one of Indiana’s many covered bridges. It is located just outside the town of Attica, Indiana. This covered bridge is still in use today and is in great shape!

This makes for a great day trip. I will warn you restaurant sitings were few and far between. I would recommend bringing snacks or packing a picnic!

Introduction

So, one way or another, you have landed in Champaign-Urbana. Now what is there to do?

This two small town community has tons of stuff going on. I will do my best to scour the area to find fun and exciting places to visit, things to do, and restaurants to enjoy in and around Champaign-Urbana. Both towns have lots of various activities that go on throughout the year and I am hoping to give a place to find out what is going on in the area along with show you a few hidden gems that you may not stumble across otherwise.

My husband and I both love to be outdoors and lucky for us, there are several parks in and around Champaign-Urbana for us to checkout. For day trips, there is Kickapoo State Park in Westville, IL; Turkey Run and Shades Park in Indiana and nearby lakes include Clinton, Mattoon, and Shelbyville.

We also LOVE to eat and the Champaign-Urbana area has AMAZING food. We are blessed with tons of delicious mom and pop restaurants.

I do truly love the area and hope you do (or come to) love the area, as well. If you have any suggestions on places for me to check out, I’d love to hear from you!
